PORT Research: National Energy Park

Twenty new nuclear power plants are bundled with 2,000 acres of ecological preserve per facility in order to 1) mitigate the perceived concerns of environmentalists by creating a vast wildlife habitat around these facilities; 2) isolate the facilities as far as possible from highly populated areas in order to prevent any risk of contamination to urbanized areas; and 3) to demonstrate the possibilities of a 21st century ideal of a National Park that is focused not on pastoral or picturesque experiences, but on ecological preservation and environmental protectionism while; 4) creating jobs and alternative sources of stimulus for the American economy.

“Since September 11, the nation’s 104 nuclear plants have become an object of much attention from homeland-security experts and terrorists alike.” The result has been the creation of a militarized no-mans land around these facilities that has unexpectedly transformed into a vibrant, diverse wildlife habitat “punctuated only by the songs of birds.”
